These are bedrooms one, two, three, and the kitchen and bathroom. I am pleased with how everything but the bathroom came out, I was having a difficult time working with it and I can't figure out why it is so dotted. Overall I like the final product that you can achieve with viz, even though the program is difficult to use. I still need more time with it obviously to get better.

CNNC Schematic Design

The concept for my schematic design of CNNC is the idea of "pathways". CNNC is the pathway to a new life for all of the immigrants coming through their doors so I thought it was important to have the building mirror this. Through use of a strong axial plan, and pathways created through the flooring material, with color and light aiding in the guidance of the building, I have created a clean, direct and warm plan for the CNNC group.

I decided to use Pop Art as my inspiration for my Vote! poster. I wanted to do something fun and lighthearted since politics are so serious, I thought it would be a good change of pace. I took a picture of my horses rear, and modified it. Even though the design is simple it took several hours to ge the craft to par. I think its really pretty goofy but its a fun poster and I enjoyed it.

Styles In Graphic Design

Nostalgic Remix~ No fonts are used in this graphic tee, this classic pattern of grandpa's socks brings back memories of the good old days. The monotone pattern with the spark of red makes the pattern more noticable. The graphic pattern is just on the front of the shirt in a square which makes the shirt seem more modern.

Retro Mod~ Different fonts are used to express the different messages of the add like the "Happy Holidays" which harkens to the retro days. It is the most important text on the add. It is also the brightest part of the add as well, which makes it easy to understand what the add is portraying. The wavy texture in the bottom left corner helps understand that this is an add for hair cuts and design. The spacing is done in a grid pattern to make the informational easily readable.

Pop Art~ Fonts are used rarely in this add they are not the main focus. The colors are very bright, hence the "pop" about the art. Bold primary colors are the favorite choice. Textures are also used to assist in the different areas of the image. Since shade and shadow is not used, texture needs to be used. The face is the largest part of the image with everything else framing it.

Bauhaus~ Fonts are used in very linear block terms accentuating the design. Colors are fairly monochromatic and muted. Everything is smooth, to evoke the smooth, sleekness of Bauhaus design. The design is turned on an angle instead of being directly up and down to add the interest of the piece. The important aspect of Bauhaus design is the simple quality of their designs and the understated accents.

Here is my first attempt at Illustrator. This was sooo frustrating!! But the end result is very cool. I like all the different things you can do with illustrator, it is so different than photoshop.

Parallelism In Nature

This was my first iteration of the parallelism of a man made and natural object, taking inspiration from the paint add with the nautiulus shell. I wanted to evoke the idea that a pinecone can be viewed as a chandelier in nature, it is the same concept, hanging down from above, living with a function and being an object of beauty. However this one was not my favorite. I decided to go with the second one, Natural Light, I felt it captured what i was going for the best. The third was just playing around with another idea, but I did not think it was as successful.

Good Graphic Add?

1- The design of this add for Benjamin Moore Paints does reflect its function and purpose. The nautilus shell and quote are very effective at following their slogan of leading the way in color, service, style and products. The message is very appropriate for the "new age" paints that they are promoting. The design meets the clients objectives because it inspires a wonder about what is so special and new about their paints. The design stands out from the other pages because it is mainly black while most of the others have vibrant colors so it stands out. The spiral of the shell carries your eye around the page well. And the visual elements are cohesive with their logo standing out in front. The image makes me more interested in finding out more about their product.

2-The "Tropical Life" add took a different approach from the paint add. They threw vibrant colors and a jumble of interest in the readers face to give an idea about all they had to offer. Their add is fun which is what they are trying to express about their line. However I am still not sure about what they are selling...which might be a good ploy. It makes the viewer more interested to go to their website and see what they are selling.

3-Wolf Gordon add is very successful at expressing its product. It seems very natural and not overly composed which works very well with selling their natural materials. The add looks very home made with its patchwork look,which accompanies along well with their green products.

Welcome Mat

For my country Bulgaria, I tried to create a mat representative of the traditions they cherished as a country. I wanted my mat to resemble a rose, which is a huge part of their culture. Every year the biggest event in Bulgaria is the Festival of Roses. Roses are a huge part of their economy, they sell to all the big perfumes. I tied the end of the fabric together with a red and white tassel, which is given to friends and relatives when they come to visit as a sign of health and happiness.

This weeks task really tested my ability to think in a design manner, as well as my ability to push myself at photo shop. Both were difficult. It was very hard to come up with something that would spark and emotion without using people. However, I figured there could not be much more of a surprise in the desert than finding a box with a bottle of water in it. Hopefully you are somewhat surprised.

Pattern Perception

For my first attempt with Photoshop, we were asked to take a piece of architecture, and then to make a pattern of it representing something in nature. I chose the Astron Hotel in Dusseldorf, Germany; a very high-tech building. I tried to create the idea of a pebble dropped into the water radiating out, since the building reminded me of rippling water.

I think it is fairly successful for my first attempt at photoshop! Hopefully it can only get better from here.

In today’s architectural world, the computer is hugely relied on as an aid to accomplish ideas that humans alone can not transmit on paper. Computing is still used as a mere tool in the industry; nothing more than a very accurate extension of the arm.
Computers also serve as a communication tool and a way to connect. The ability to email and transfer images via the internet has changed the way we design. Ideas can be sent at the click of a mouse and co-workers and clients can exist thousands of miles apart and still communicate ideas far more effectively than by mailing plans and talking on the phone.
When considering what the roles of computing in design will be in the future, one can only guess. When looking back to the past and the start of computer aided design, compared to today, everything seemed so mundane. Giant computers with a stylus that could only accurately portray geometric 2-D forms; in comparison to today, where computers aid in the creation of things humans alone cannot do. At the rate we are going, at some point computers will most likely be more knowledgeable than humans. As stated in the article, computers are starting to have a huge impact on our everyday lives; we are beginning to live in a world run by computers. Cell phones, cars, even buildings are all starting to be controlled by computers to some degree and that can only continue. Computers and the internet are actually becoming a destination, which has never been the case before. A completely cyber world is not so out of the question anymore.
As far as computers in response to design, the next step beyond where we are currently would have to be for the computers to begin to have some sort of input into the design itself. The accuracy seen in computers and their vast capacity for storage, may lead to their ability to make design decisions on their own, not just being a tool anymore. Computers may become a good resource for design ideas, of possibly become designers themselves.

The “Closer to Home” installation in the Gatewood Art Gallery is an installation conceptually celebrating Edward Loewenstein and modern design in Greensboro. Modern design and the work of Loewenstein are showcased through the exhibit in a design reflecting the work of Loewenstein himself.
The materials, color choices, and the play with light assist in manifesting the concept of the exhibit by creating a modern space to exist in. The wood and the different stains chosen express Loewenstein’s idea, as well as modernism’s idea of honesty of the materials. A darker palate of colors would have been better. Creating more of a contrast would make the graphics and text stand out more, they seem to get lost in a sea of natural wood, that also does not really coincide with the gallery. The mix of the natural materials of wood, with the industrial steel rods and meshing is a nice contrast expressing the connection of man made to nature. The way light plays into the space really manifests the concept. When the light shines through the gallery windows just right, the installation comes into a whole new life, which really expresses the whole point of the exhibit.
This image gazing from inside the gallery back to the lobby shows how the exhibit is affected by light and how alive in can become when it shines through just right. Loewenstein’s designs were warm and inviting, embracing life, which is the purpose of Closer to Home; the appreciation of modernism as a mechanism for living and experiencing life.
In support of the concept, all the images, texts, and graphics are all geared toward passing on information about Loewenstein and modern design in Greensboro. This installation is a great way to get the meaning of modernism out to the public of Greensboro, and the most understandable way of doing so is through text and images. Without these, the exhibit would be practically unreadable. The heart of the exhibit is to get the information and the excitement of modernism out to others.
The most successful media in the exhibit is all of the pictures. They are a great window into the past. The collaboration of images of the architecture, as well as images of Loewenstein, his firm, and the pictures from Woman’s College really bring the project “closer to home”, making it more relatable. Anyone can understand the meaning of a picture. The text was interesting and helpful, if you had time to sit and read it. Along the lines of which media was the most successful, the pictures had a much bigger impact in expressing the concept than the textual information did.
This image is the wall with the picture of Loewenstein on it, crossing the barrier of the gallery and the lobby. This is the wall that stood out the most, the bold image expressed Loewenstein’s importance as an architect and individual. There is a huge impact on visitors walking into the installation because the exhibit engulfs you into modernism. It is almost surreal, the gallery is so warm, and the lighting gives the whole area a soft glow. It is a desirable place to exist. This warmth in the expression of modernism will have a great impact on the skeptics of modernism because it proves that modernism can be warm and livable.

I want each space to feel warm, and to have opportunities for the mothers to add their own to make it feel more personalized. I will supply the base and the girls will be able to create their home.

1) Design is fundamental practice central to humanity because it adds something more to the living experience. The living experience would be dull and mundane without the different options of design. A good design in space can completely change the way an atmosphere feels; it is an extremely powerful tool. Design can also be a connection among societies. People desire to live in spaces and own things that they like and that tell a story; a timeless design can provide this. A good design unites people, and a great design could change the world.

2)The Robie House was paramount for the design of the suburban home. Wright's design set a new standard and precedent of design never seen before. The Robie house is Wright's ideal of "organic architecture", defining the house as an organism displayed from the inside out. The design theory behind this home that links to today is the classic modern idea of expressing the inside on the outside, reducing decoration to a minimum, as well as the emphasis of the horizontal. Wright also placed great importance on the idea of the hearth and home, all of which are important design qualities looked to today when designing the home, and other buildings of the like.

3)It is important to look back to the precedents in architecture when we begin to design; there is a lot to be learned there. Inspiration should be taken from the classics, but a new spin must be put on them to make a design unique to the current time period. It is imperative to go back, take what worked from the precedents, and display an understanding of the design in the work, then make it your own, incorporating modern materials and ordering ideas. When the past is embraced in design, that in itself shows the innovation of new and modern design by examplifying an appreciation of things before.

4)Along the lines of the "icons in modernism", the military still has a lot to do with designs of the 21st century. Focusing on the idea of "Higher, Faster, Farther", design and the military are moving at a rapid pace. The design ideas of the military are striving to be modern, new, and the best in the world. There is a constant competition among nations to be on the top, and this idea flows down into all aspects of design from technology to clothing. All forms of design are becoming more streamlined and accurate.

Best of Intentions Just Won't Cut It

Our design of My Sister's House is distilled in a distinctive, coherent design that compliments all of the charettes, and the project analysis that we have done. Through my project analysis of other teen pregnancy centers and womens shelters I have learned through the narratives of women within the places what they want out of the shelter, and what they do and do not like within the space they are currently. Our design reflects the changes and the pros of the precedent buildings studied. The artists we researched for the 1970s had a large impact on the design. The common thread between everything in the 70s was breaking out of the box. So, within our design, we decided to push the limits of the exterior walls and form a blocky but understandable and functional interior design. With every charette we have done from the light machine, to the exterior model, each has taught a lesson. With each model, as a group we are beginning to understand what works, and what doesn't, and what needs to be changed, scrapped, and improved on.

The evening photos look very similar to the morning shots. Everything is pretty monotone, not too much differention between the top and bottom of the machine. Theoretically their would be a sharp contrast between the two sides of the object with an extreme highlight on one side ane extreme shadow on the other.

I got lucky in the afternoon with a little part in the clouds. The sun hit directly on top of the light machine giving the most contrast between the open V and the underneath of the wings. From each angle the light cast effected it differently.

Morning Sun

The morning was not the most opportune time for photos, it was drizzling and there was hardly any sunlight. However, the intended outcome was to have a shadow underneath the top wing, but little high light within the V facing the sky.

My Design

My Light Machine is designed to maximize the shadows and reflections of the sun in the different areas of the site. I wanted to design something simple, efficient, durable, and easy to move. I chose white foam core and duct tape because both materials will reflect light very well.

-Unfortunately there was heavy cloud cover, so the maximum reflection was not achieved..
